Games consoles have been popular Christmas gifts for quite some time now and the trend doesn’t look likely to alter any time soon? With the lucrative Christmas market in mind, Sony have stolen a march on their competitors by announcing the release of their 3rd generation incarnation of the PlayStation games console, the PlayStation 3.
Not just a simple upgrade or facelift the Sony Play Station 3 Slim is a totally new design which is smaller, lighter and more power efficient than its predecessors. The PS3 features the ability to play true High Definition picture quality with a built-in BluRay player and HDMI connectivity. Games can be played either off-line or on-line with multi player gaming, video messaging, content downloads and internet browsing all available via a broadband internet connection.
The Hardware
The PS3 uses an IBM processor and Nvidia Graphics card which enables the PS3 to run up to 40 times faster than its predecessor with a picture quality of true 1080pHD. The sound performance supports Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, DTS 5.1 theatre surround and Linear PCM7.1. The Playstation 3 also incorporates a 120GB hard disc drive so there is no shortage of storage capacity for games and downloaded content.
Blu-Ray Built-in
Blu-ray compatibility offers 6 times the data capacity of existing games consoles which will lead to a new generation of games being developed to exploit this. The PS3 is also compatible with traditional disc formats including DVD and CD-ROM.
New Controller
Sony have picked up a trick from the Nintendo Wii by incorporating movement sensing technology within the game controller. This offers a whole new experience to the PlayStation with a built-in sensing system offering 3 dimensions of movement control. The new controllers are also Bluetooth enabled so can be used wirelessly or via a USB cable.
